Faith

“Faith, can you swing by my office before you go?” Buttmunch calls out from his office as I walk past his door.

“Sure. I just need to shut down and pack up.”

“OK. No rush.” My step falters at Marvin’s sudden change in disposition. He’s usually gruff, aloof, downright rude, indifferent, bored, or all of the above. Yet this is the third time today where he’s spoken to me like I’m a human being. It’s disconcerting.

Tuesday morning, I pitched my idea for the Bear Mountain Homestead story to both Buttmunch and the owner of the Anchorage Press, giving them a brief rundown of the history, the huge fan following due to Aster’s two mountain man series, and then reminded them of the big news story last year where Van—who lives at the homestead—worked with the Coopers to save both Moose and Bear Mountains from development, defeating his father to protect the land he was sent to Alaska to acquire. Finally, I went in for the kill and added how much national media interest the story could potentially garner, especially with the climate change and sustainability talking points. I framed the piece as ‘how one community is trying to save the world, one mountain at a time.’

Marvin looked skeptical, Giles looked like a kid at Christmas. That’s when I doubled down, giving it one last shot because even after one night sleeping without Walker’s arms round mine, I was missing that man like crazy. “I’ll continue with my current workload while also doing interviews and researching the Bear Mountain story.”

That was two days ago and now, I’m near on skipping to my shoebox of a cubicle. I’m packing up my laptop and clearing my desk when my cell pings with a notification. I’m already smiling when I open the photo message from Walker because it’s a photo of him and Mason standing in the middle of the Den, posing together like they’re a dancing couple. Mason taking it that one step further by holding a single red rose in his teeth.

Me: I’m jealous and pissed, Walker Long!

Walker: What? Why? I promise you’re a much better dancer than my brother.

I giggle and shake my head at the phone.

Me: You were supposed to save ALL of your dances for me. I’m away from the mountain for two days and I’m already being replaced as your dance partner.

Walker: Sweetheart, the second you set foot back here at the homestead, you can dance with me whenever, wherever, and however you want.

Me: Clothes on or off?

Walker: Damn. Don’t torture a man like that. I can still taste you on my tongue.

Me: Stop talking dirty when I’m still in the office. I am a good girl, remember? I’ll call you when I get home.

Walker: I’ll look forward to it.

I’m still smiling when I hook my messenger bag over my shoulder and walk toward Marvin’s office, tapping my knuckles on his door and holding my breath as I brace myself for whatever he’s about to lay on me.

Instead of a look of disdain, buttmunch actually smiles at me.
